About MATTaboutWOOD.com

MATT about WOOD was established in December Y2k, and operates from a converted barn in the Derbyshire village of Sutton Scarsdale, (around 5 mins from Junction 29 of the M1)

Being a small business we are able to take on almost any kind of work. We specialize in the production of high quality, bespoke pieces of furniture, often incorporating hand-cut dovetails, and traditional mortice and tennon joinery, not often found on pieces of furniture being produced today. As well as this we undertake most other types of woodwork, such as joinery and woodturning. In the past our contracts have ranged from, transport saddles to stop 4m diameter pipes fall off the back of lorries, to handles for replica bronze-age swords. Our philosophy here is “If its made out of wood, and we can fit it in our workshop / yard, then we can do it”.

MATTaboutWOOD have contacts up and down the country, importing timber from all around the world, and can therefor obtain almost any timber*, from anywhere around the globe. (*Subject to availability)

With the recent acquisition of a small chainsaw, we are now able to offer timbers, (mainly for turned pieces), that are not easy to obtain in the correct sizes from timber merchants, such as burrs (the knobbley growths that appear on the side of some trees such as oak and elm.

See the 'Turnery' page for examples of pieces turned from burrs) and and timber cut from specimen trees such as Laburnum. We are also able to offer the service of turning/making pieces from timber with sentimental or historical importance to you, such as an old tree which had to be felled, or church pews that are being replaced with chairs, the timber from which would otherwise go the local Scouts bonfire.
